Pyjama Yoga!

Sleep plays a vital roll in living a healthy life. It helps improve memory, strengthens immune system, sharpens your attention and helps the body heal itself, to name a few benefits.

During periods in life, maybe during times of stress or illness, sleep may elude us.

Here is a bedtime routine to help with insomnia:-

1. BATHTIME = YOUR TIME

Drawing a deliciously warm/hot bath, adding a few drops of your favourite essential oils (mine are lavender and lemon tree both perfect for relaxation and promoting a healthy sleep) or adding bubble bath to soak your muscles and calm your mind. This can be the perfect time to reflect on your day. Candles add a soothing ambience which will surely melt all your stress away!

2. BALASANA – CHILDS POSE

Childs pose is the pose of surrender. Resting in childs pose give us an opportunity to connect our breath with our body. It relaxes our mind and being in this pose promotes a feeling of safety.

3. MARJARIASANA-BITILASANA – CAT COW

These poses stretches the back and front of the body providing a gentle massage to the spine and internal organs. One of the benefits of performing a few slow rounds of cat/cow poses before bed, is it relieves stress.

4. SUPTA MATSYENDRASANA – SUPINE SPINAL TWIST

This is a restorative pose which detoxes, massages internal organs and balances sacroiliac joints leaving you ready for a good nights sleep.

5. VIPARITA KARANI – LEGS UP THE WALL

Lying in the supine position on the floor or on your bed,if it is against a wall, and lifting your legs straight up against the wall. This pose relieves anxiety and mild depression, slows down heart rate and is known to rejuvenate the entire body.

6. BHRAMARI PRANAYAMA – HUMMING BEE BREATH

This breathing exercise will calm the mind and nervous system as the humming sound vibrations have a natural, soothing effect.

7. SAVASANA (CORPSE POSE) & YOGA NIDRA MEDITATION

Lying in savasana and playing a yoga nidra meditation completely releases the body of tensions and could have you asleep in no time at all.

All of the above will relax your body, mind and breath and will become a daily treat for yourself to enjoy at the end of the day.
